Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple)

Overview

Swayambhunath, popularly known as the Monkey Temple for its resident rhesus macaques, occupies a hilltop overlooking the Kathmandu Valley. This ancient religious complex features a striking white dome topped by a gilded spire and is sacred to both Buddhists and Hindus.

History

Historical records confirm the site as a Buddhist pilgrimage destination since at least the 5th century CE. Emperor Ashoka is said to have visited in the 3rd century BCE. The stupa was damaged in the 2015 earthquake and subsequently restored.
