Boudhanath is one of the largest spherical stupas in Nepal and a focal point for Tibetan Buddhism. Rising 36 meters high, its massive mandala-shaped dome dominates the skyline of eastern Kathmandu and is surrounded by a vibrant community of monasteries and shops.
Believed to have been built in the 14th century, though some scholars date its origins to the 5th century CE. It became a major pilgrimage site for Tibetan refugees after 1959. UNESCO listed it as a World Heritage Site in 1979. It was restored after damage from the 2015 earthquake.
