Khoo Kongsi
Khoo Kongsi is the grandest Chinese clan temple in Malaysia, a lavishly decorated complex on Cannon Square combining ancestral worship halls, theatrical stages, and administrative buildings. History
The Khoo clan, originating from Fujian province, established their kongsi (clan association) in Penang in 1835. The current temple was built in 1906 after a fire destroyed the original, even more lavish structure in 1894—legend says the original was so ornate that the heavens set it alight out of jealousy.
Visitor Tips
- Entry fee: RM10; the admission includes a short explanatory brochure.
- Morning visit: The courtyard is best photographed in morning light when the roof sculptures are illuminated.
