Highlights
- Pagoda of Ten Thousand Buddhas: The 30-metre seven-storey tower transitions from a Chinese octagonal base through a Thai middle section to a Burmese crown, housing thousands of alabaster and bronze Buddha statues.
- Guanyin Statue: A towering 30.2-metre bronze Goddess of Mercy statue sheltered under an enormous octagonal pavilion at the hilltop.
- Inclined Lift: A covered funicular connects the lower temple grounds to the Guanyin statue terrace, offering views over George Town.
History
Construction began in 1890 under the guidance of Chinese immigrant monk Beow Lean. The temple evolved over more than a century, with the iconic pagoda completed in 1930 and the colossal Guanyin statue unveiled in 2002.
