Dataran Lang (Eagle Square) is Langkawi's most recognisable landmark — a 12-metre-tall sculpture of a reddish-brown eagle poised for flight, standing on Kuah's waterfront. It's the first sight greeting visitors arriving by ferry, and the island's symbolic mascot.
The eagle statue was erected in 2003 to symbolise the island's name — 'Langkawi' is believed to derive from the Malay word 'helang' (eagle) combined with 'kawi' (strong or reddish-brown). The Brahminy kite, which the sculpture represents, is commonly spotted across the archipelago.
