The Yangon Circular Railway is a 46-kilometre commuter train loop that takes approximately three hours to complete one full circuit of the city. Built by the British in 1954, this gloriously slow and rattling train ride offers an unfiltered window into daily Yangon life — from suburban stations to rural villages to the bustling Insein wholesale market.
The circular railway was built in 1954 by the Burmese government using British colonial-era infrastructure. The line was modernised in 2017 with Japanese rolling stock, replacing some of the older carriages. Despite improvements, the line retains its atmospheric character with wooden station buildings and relaxed pace.
