The National Museum of Myanmar is a five-storey institution showcasing the country's artistic and historical heritage. Its prize exhibit is the Sihasana (Lion Throne), the last surviving royal throne of the Burmese monarchy, seized by the British in 1886 and returned in 1948. The museum covers everything from prehistoric artefacts to royal regalia, traditional musical instruments, and ethnic minority costumes.
The museum was established in 1952 and moved to its current purpose-built location on Pyay Road in 1996. The Lion Throne was taken to the Indian Museum in Kolkata after the British annexation of Upper Burma in 1886 and was returned to Myanmar as a gesture of goodwill upon independence in 1948.
