Karaweik Palace is a gilded concrete replica of a Burmese royal barge floating on the eastern shore of Kandawgyi Lake. Built in the 1970s, its twin prows — topped by the mythical karaweik bird — and lavish gold-leaf exterior create one of Yangon's most photographed silhouettes, especially when reflected in the calm lake waters at sunset.
Karaweik Palace was built between 1972 and 1974 during the socialist era as a cultural venue. The karaweik is a mythical bird in Burmese tradition, said to have a melodious call. The building was constructed entirely from reinforced concrete but finished to resemble teak and gold leaf. It has functioned as a restaurant and event venue over the years.
