Overview
The Jardin Exotique de Monaco (Exotic Garden) is a steep hillside garden showcasing thousands of succulent and cactus species from around the world. Opened in 1933, it clings to a cliff face with panoramic views stretching from Italy to the Esterel mountains.
Highlights
- Succulent Collection: Over 1,000 species of cacti and succulents, some over a century old, including giant specimens of Euphorbia, Aloe, and Agave.
- Grotte de l'Observatoire: A natural limestone cave at the base of the garden with stalactites and stalagmites, accessible by guided tour.
- Panoramic Views: The winding paths offer sweeping vistas over Monaco, the port, and the Mediterranean coastline.
History
Engineer Augustin Gastaud began planting the cliff in 1913, but the garden only opened to the public in 1933. The Grotte de l'Observatoire beneath it was explored by Prince Albert I and contains prehistoric human remains. The garden was classified as a historic monument.
