The Casino de Monte-Carlo is a gambling and entertainment complex on the Place du Casino in Monaco. Designed by architect Charles Garnier and opened in 1863, it remains one of the most famous casinos in the world and a symbol of Monaco's glamour and wealth.
Prince Charles III of Monaco authorized the casino's construction to save the Grimaldi dynasty from bankruptcy. The original 1863 building was redesigned by Charles Garnier between 1878 and 1879. Revenue from the casino transformed Monaco from a poor protectorate into one of the wealthiest places on Earth.
