Pettah is Colombo's largest and most chaotic bazaar district — a sprawling grid of streets where each lane specializes in a different product: electronics, textiles, spices, hardware, or jewelry. It is the city's commercial heartbeat.
Pettah (from the Tamil word 'pettai', meaning outside the fort) was the native trading quarter during colonial times. It has been a market district for over 500 years, surviving Portuguese, Dutch, and British occupations.
