Beira Lake is a 65-hectare body of water at the geographic heart of Colombo, flanked by modern towers, colonial buildings, and Buddhist temples. Once part of the city's Dutch-era canal network, it now serves as a peaceful urban oasis.
The lake was expanded by the Portuguese in the 16th century for defense; the Dutch later connected it to a canal system. In the 20th century, land reclamation reduced it to a fraction of its original size, but conservation efforts have stabilized its current footprint.
