Overview
Wat Mixai is a centrally located temple distinguished by its heavy Bangkok-style architectural influence, including large and colourful yaksha (demon guardian) statues flanking the entrance gate — a feature rarely seen elsewhere in Vientiane.
Highlights
- Yaksha Guardian Statues: Two imposing polychrome demon guardians stand at the main gate, reminiscent of those at Bangkok's Wat Phra Kaew.
- Thai-Lao Fusion Architecture: The sim features a central multi-tiered roof in the Bangkok style, decorated with Lao naga finials and gold-leaf pediments.
- Active Monastery: Unlike museum-temples, Wat Mixai is a functioning monastery where visitors may encounter monks in daily routines.
History
Wat Mixai was rebuilt in the Bangkok style during the 19th century when Vientiane was under Siamese suzerainty. The Thai architectural influences are a lasting record of this political period. The temple's name means "Victory Temple."
