Talat Sao (Morning Market)

Overview

Talat Sao (Morning Market) is Vientiane's largest and most established covered market, operating since the 1960s. Despite its name, it trades all day and comprises both a characterful older hall selling textiles and handicrafts and a modern multi-storey mall.

• Lao Silk and Textiles: The ground floor of the old hall is the best place in Vientiane to buy handwoven Lao silk sinh (traditional skirts), often sold directly by weavers.
• Gold and Silver: Rows of jewellery stalls sell traditional Lao gold-work and silver at competitive prices.

History

The original market dates to the 1960s and was one of the few commercial centres to survive the 1975 revolution largely intact. The modern Talat Sao Mall was added in 2010, creating an interesting contrast between old-style bazaar trading and contemporary retail.
