Zenkov Cathedral

Overview

Zenkov Cathedral (Ascension Cathedral) is a pastel-painted wooden Russian Orthodox cathedral in Panfilov Park. Standing 56 metres tall, it is one of the tallest wooden buildings in the world — and remarkably, it was constructed entirely without nails.

• Earthquake survivor: The cathedral survived the devastating 1911 Kemin earthquake that destroyed much of Almaty.

History

Designed by architect Andrey Zenkov and engineer A. P. Golubin, the cathedral was completed in 1907. During Soviet rule it served as a museum and concert hall. It was returned to the Orthodox Church and reconsecrated in 1995.
