The Almaty Metro is Central Asia's first underground metro system, opened in 2011 after decades of construction. Its nine stations are decorated in a lavish style reminiscent of Moscow and St Petersburg metro stations, making it an attraction in its own right.
Planning began in 1978, but construction was repeatedly delayed by funding shortages and the collapse of the Soviet Union. The first 8.56 km line with seven stations finally opened on 1 December 2011, making Almaty the 100th city in the world with a metro.
