Wat Damnak is a Buddhist monastery on the east bank of the Siem Reap River that also houses the Center for Khmer Studies, an international research institution. The serene, leafy compound offers a quiet retreat from the tourist centre and a window into Cambodian academic life.
Damnak means 'royal residence', and the site was once part of the provincial governor's compound. The monastery was established in the 19th century. The Center for Khmer Studies was founded in 1999 as a joint initiative between international universities and Cambodian institutions.
