Overview
Phsar Chas (Old Market) is Siem Reap's oldest and most authentic market, a bustling covered hall where locals shop for fresh produce, meat, fish, and spices alongside tourists browsing for souvenirs. The market occupies a French colonial-era building near the riverfront.
Highlights
- Fresh Produce Section: Stalls piled with tropical fruits, herbs, fermented fish (prahok), and freshly ground spices.
- Souvenir Stalls: Affordable scarves, T-shirts, stone carvings, and silver jewellery on the tourist-facing side.
- Street Food Perimeter: Surrounding food stalls serve noodle soups, grilled meats, and fresh fruit shakes.
History
The market has operated on this site since at least the French colonial period in the early 20th century. It remains the primary fresh market for Siem Reap's Old Town residents and provides a genuine glimpse of daily Cambodian commerce.
