Wat Ounalom

Overview

Wat Ounalom is the most important Buddhist monastery in Cambodia, serving as the seat of the Mohanikay order — the country's largest Buddhist fraternity. Located at the northern end of Sisowath Quay, the compound includes numerous stupas, a library, and residential buildings for monks.

Highlights

• Main Stupa: Said to contain an eyebrow hair of the Buddha, brought from Sri Lanka in the 15th century.
• Monk Residences: Active monastic community; visitors can observe daily rituals.
• River Views: The upper floors of the main building offer views over the Tonlé Sap.

History

Founded in 1443, Wat Ounalom is one of the five original pagodas built when Phnom Penh became the capital. It was badly damaged under the Khmer Rouge but has been substantially restored since.

• Respectful dress: Cover shoulders and knees when entering the temple grounds.
• Best time: Early morning to see monks collecting alms.
• Duration: 20–30 minutes.
