Tsuboya (壺屋) is Naha's historic pottery quarter, a compact neighborhood of traditional kilns, ceramic studios, and shops producing Okinawa's distinctive yachimun ware. The narrow 'yachimun street' (pottery street) has been a center of ceramic arts for over 300 years.
In 1682, the Ryukyuan government consolidated Naha's scattered potters into Tsuboya, creating a dedicated ceramics district. The area survived the Battle of Okinawa relatively intact — one of the few Naha neighborhoods to do so — making its old stone walls and red-tiled buildings some of the oldest surviving structures in the city.
