The Sonohyan Utaki Stone Gate (園比屋武御嶽石門) is a UNESCO World Heritage stone gate standing just outside Shuri Castle's Shureimon Gate. It served as a prayer gate where Ryukyuan kings would pray for safe journeys before leaving the castle.
Built in 1519 during the reign of King Shō Shin, the gate is an excellent example of Ryukyuan stone masonry. It survived the Battle of Okinawa with damage but was restored in the 1950s. The sacred grove (utaki) behind the gate was a worship site for the chief priestess of the Ryukyu Kingdom.
