Sōgenji (崇元寺) is the atmospheric ruin of a 16th-century Zen Buddhist temple that once served as the state temple of the Ryukyu Kingdom. Only the monumental stone gate (sanmon) and surrounding walls survive, creating a photogenic pocket of history in central Naha.
Founded in 1527 by King Shō Shin, Sōgenji served as the royal family's principal Buddhist temple for over 300 years. The temple was completely destroyed during the Battle of Okinawa in 1945; only the stone gate survived. The site was designated an Important Cultural Property and is now a small public park.
