Shikinaen (識名園) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site — a serene royal villa and garden built in 1799 for the Ryukyuan royal family. The garden's design blends Chinese, Japanese, and Okinawan landscaping traditions around a central strolling pond.
Constructed in 1799 under King Shō On for entertaining Chinese envoys (sappōshi), Shikinaen demonstrated the Ryukyu Kingdom's diplomatic sophistication. The garden was destroyed in the Battle of Okinawa but meticulously restored between 1975 and 1995. UNESCO inscribed it as a World Heritage Site in 2000.
