Tochoji is a Shingon Buddhist temple in central Hakata that houses the largest seated wooden Buddha statue in Japan — a 10.8-meter-tall camphor-wood figure completed in 1992. The temple also features a striking five-story vermillion pagoda that has become a landmark of the Hakata skyline.
Tochoji was founded in 806 AD by Kobo Daishi (Kukai), the founder of Shingon Buddhism, upon his return from studying in China — making it the oldest Shingon temple in Japan. The original structures were destroyed and rebuilt multiple times. The current Great Buddha was completed in 1992 after four years of carving.
