Fukuoka's yatai are the city's most iconic culinary experience — open-air food stalls that set up nightly along the Naka River and in Tenjin. These intimate mobile kitchens seat just 8–10 people at a counter and serve tonkotsu ramen, yakitori, oden, and tempura while fostering convivial conversation.
Yatai culture in Fukuoka dates to the post-war reconstruction period when mobile food stalls fed workers rebuilding the city. At their peak, over 400 yatai operated citywide. Today about 150 are licensed, with the city regulating their location, hygiene, and operating hours. They are recognized as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Fukuoka.
