The Hakata Machiya Folk Museum occupies a trio of traditional machiya townhouses that showcase the culture, crafts, and daily life of old Hakata. Through exhibits, live demonstrations, and reconstructed interiors, visitors can experience the merchant culture that shaped Fukuoka's identity.
The museum opened in 1999 in restored machiya buildings dating from the Meiji period (late 19th century). These wooden townhouses represent the architectural style of Hakata's merchant quarter before modernization. The museum was created to preserve and transmit the traditional crafts that made Hakata famous — particularly its textiles and ceramic dolls.
