The Fukuoka Asian Art Museum is the world's only museum dedicated exclusively to the systematic collection and exhibition of modern and contemporary Asian art. Located in the Hakata Riverain complex, it holds works from 23 Asian countries and regularly hosts artist residency programs.
The museum was established in 1999 as part of Fukuoka's strategy to position itself as a cultural gateway to Asia. It grew from the Fukuoka Art Museum's Asian art wing and the Fukuoka Asian Art Triennale, which has been held since 1979. The museum occupies the 7th and 8th floors of the Hakata Riverain building.
