History
The museum opened in 1979 as Fukuoka's main art institution. Architect Maekawa Kunio (a Le Corbusier disciple) designed the Brutalist-style building. After a 2.5-year closure for renovation, it reopened in March 2019 with improved galleries, a new café, and enhanced accessibility. The collection has grown to over 16,000 works.
