Sarnath is where the Buddha delivered his first sermon (the Dharma Chakra Pravartan) after attaining enlightenment — making it one of the four holiest sites in Buddhism. The Dhamek Stupa (5th century CE) rises 44 metres from a green park where spotted deer still roam.
