The Mattancherry Palace, commonly known as the Dutch Palace, is a 16th-century palace renowned for its extraordinary Kerala mural paintings. Built by the Portuguese around 1555 as a gift to the Raja of Kochi, it was later renovated by the Dutch in 1663, earning its popular name.
Portuguese traders built the palace around 1555 as a diplomatic gift to Veera Kerala Varma, the Raja of Kochi, to secure trading privileges. The Dutch renovated and expanded it after capturing Kochi in 1663. The palace served as the royal residence of the Kochi Maharajas until the early 20th century.
