Mattancherry and Jew Town form a historically significant neighborhood southeast of Fort Kochi, centered around centuries of spice trading and the once-thriving Jewish community. The narrow lanes are lined with antique shops, spice warehouses, and heritage buildings, creating an atmosphere rich with history and commerce.
Mattancherry was granted to the Jewish community by the Raja of Kochi in the 14th century, becoming a center of the lucrative spice trade. The street around the Pardesi Synagogue became known as Jew Town, flourishing as a commercial hub. After the creation of Israel in 1948, most Jewish residents emigrated, but the cultural and architectural legacy endures.
