The Chinese fishing nets (Cheena Vala) are iconic cantilevered fishing installations along the northern shore of Fort Kochi, standing as one of Kochi's most photographed landmarks. Believed to have been introduced by traders from the court of Kublai Khan in the 14th century, these shore-operated lift nets are among the oldest such structures in the world still in active use.
The nets were reputedly introduced between 1350 and 1450 CE by Chinese explorers, possibly during the era of Zheng He's maritime expeditions. Each structure requires a team of up to six fishermen to operate and can span up to 20 meters. They became a symbol of Kochi's centuries-old maritime trade connections with China.
