Jaigarh Fort

Overview

Jaigarh Fort sits on the Cheel ka Teela (Hill of Eagles) ridge above Amber Fort, connected by subterranean passages. Built in 1726 by Sawai Jai Singh II, this military stronghold houses Jaivana — the world's largest cannon on wheels — and offers commanding views across the Aravalli range.

Highlights

• Jaivana Cannon: Cast in 1720, the 50-tonne cannon has a barrel over 6 metres long and was reportedly fired only once — the ball travelling 35 kilometres.
• Armoury & War Museum: Collection of swords, shields, muskets, and battle paintings.
• Water Tanks: The fort's three massive underground water tanks could sustain a garrison for months.

History

Jaigarh was built to protect Amber Fort from invaders and served as the state treasury. Legend holds that a vast treasure was buried here by the Kachwaha rulers. In 1976, the Indian government excavated parts of the fort but officially found nothing.

Visitor Tips

• Combine with Amber Fort: A tunnel connects the two forts; some guided tours include both.
• Less crowded: Fewer tourists than Amber Fort, making it ideal for photography.
• Duration: 1–1.5 hours.
