Mangeshi Temple

Overview

Mangeshi Temple in Priol is one of Goa's most revered Hindu temples, dedicated to Lord Mangesh — a local incarnation of Shiva. It features an elegant seven-storey deepstambha, octagonal drum tower, and white-and-ochre exterior.

History

The original deity was worshipped in Cortalim. During the Portuguese Inquisition, the idol was moved to Priol in Ponda taluka — beyond Portuguese jurisdiction — in the 16th century. The current structure dates to the 18th century.
