Overview

A chaotic, colourful neighbourhood behind New Delhi Railway Station, long known as the backpacker hub of Delhi. Its narrow lanes are packed with budget hotels, fabric shops, street food stalls, and an eclectic international atmosphere.

History

Paharganj takes its name from the "hilly neighbourhood" that grew as a commercial centre outside the walled city. It became the default backpacker quarter after the 1960s when cheap guesthouses mushroomed near the railway station.
