Panch Mahal is a five-storey palatial structure within the Fatehpur Sikri complex, built as a wind tower for the royal women of Akbar's court. Each storey has progressively fewer columns, tapering from 84 at the base to just one at the top.
Inspired by Buddhist viharas and Persian wind-catchers, the structure originally had stone screens (jalis) between the columns for privacy. These were removed during later periods. The building was used exclusively by women of the zenana (royal harem).
