Parangtritis is the most famous and culturally significant beach south of Yogyakarta, where the Indian Ocean crashes onto a dramatic coast of black volcanic sand backed by towering limestone cliffs. According to Javanese mythology, it is the domain of Kanjeng Ratu Kidul, the Queen of the South Seas.
Parangtritis holds deep spiritual significance in Javanese culture. The Sultan of Yogyakarta performs an annual Labuhan ceremony here, offering royal garments and food to Kanjeng Ratu Kidul. Visitors are traditionally warned not to wear green clothing, as it is said to attract the Queen's attention and be pulled into the sea.
