Alun-Alun Utara (the northern square) is the formal ceremonial front yard of the Kraton, flanked by two sacred banyan trees and bordered by the Sonobudoyo Museum and the Great Mosque. It serves as the starting point of the Kraton's cosmological axis running north to Tugu monument and Mount Merapi.
The northern alun-alun has been the ceremonial heart of the Sultanate since the Kraton's founding in 1755. During Garebeg festivals, elaborate offerings of rice shaped into mountains (gunungan) are carried from the Kraton through the square and distributed to the crowd — a tradition maintained for over 250 years.
