Istiqlal Mosque

Overview

Istiqlal Mosque is the largest mosque in Southeast Asia, with a capacity of over 200,000 worshippers. Completed in 1978, it sits directly across from Jakarta Cathedral, symbolising Indonesia's religious tolerance.

• Grand Prayer Hall: A vast, column-free space beneath a 45-metre dome.
• Seven Gates: Each gate is named after one of the chapters of the Quran's Al-Fatihah.
• Tunnel of Friendship: An underground passage connecting the mosque to the cathedral.

History

Designed by Protestant architect Friedrich Silaban, the mosque was commissioned by President Sukarno in 1954 and completed in 1978 under President Suharto. Its name means "independence" in Arabic.
