Sioni Cathedral

Overview

Sioni Cathedral (Dormition of the Virgin) is one of Tbilisi’s principal churches, in the heart of Old Town. Originally built in the 6th century, it served as the seat of the Catholicos-Patriarch.

Highlights

• Cross of St. Nino: Replica of the grapevine cross used to convert Georgia in 337 AD.
• Frescoes: Interior frescoes by Grigory Gagarin (1850s).
• Bell tower: 15th-century freestanding brick tower.

History

Destroyed and rebuilt by Arab, Mongol, and Persian invaders. The current structure dates mostly from the 13th century.
