Dongmen Pedestrian Street is Shenzhen's oldest and most bustling commercial area, a maze of shopping streets, food stalls, and markets in Luohu District. It predates the modern city, with roots as a market town dating back over 300 years.
Dongmen began as a market during the Qing dynasty, serving the walled village of Shenzhen Xu. When the Special Economic Zone was established in 1980, Dongmen was already the area's commercial heart. It was pedestrianised in 2000, though its character as a dense, intense market district has remained.
