Zhujiajiao Water Town

Overview

Zhujiajiao is a 1,700-year-old water town located 48 kilometers west of downtown Shanghai. Built along a network of canals, it features well-preserved Ming and Qing dynasty architecture, arched stone bridges, and a traditional market-town atmosphere.

Highlights

• Fangsheng Bridge: A five-arch stone bridge built in 1571, the longest and tallest in the area.
• Kezhi Garden: A classical Qing-era garden with moonviewing pavilion and rockeries.

History

Settlement dates to the Three Kingdoms period (220–280 AD). Zhujiajiao flourished as a trade hub during the Ming and Qing dynasties, its wealth visible in the elaborate bridges and temples that survive today.

• Half-Day Trip: Reachable by metro + bus or taxi in about 90 minutes from central Shanghai.
• Local Snacks: Try zongzi (sticky rice dumplings) and zharou (braised pork) from canal-side vendors.
