Yu Garden is a masterpiece of classical Chinese garden design, originally constructed in 1559 during the Ming Dynasty by official Pan Yunduan for his aging father. Covering just two hectares, it packs an astonishing density of rockeries, pavilions, ponds, and corridors.
Pan Yunduan spent 18 years building the garden to give his father a tranquil retreat. It fell into disrepair during the Opium Wars when British forces used it as a base, and was restored repeatedly in the 19th and 20th centuries.
