The Shanghai World Financial Center stands 492 meters tall in Lujiazui, instantly recognizable by its trapezoidal aperture at the summit — earning it the nickname "The Bottle Opener." It was the world's tallest building with a hole when completed in 2008.
Designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox, construction began in 1997, was halted by the Asian financial crisis, and resumed in 2003. Originally planned with a circular opening, the design was changed to a trapezoid to avoid resemblance to the Japanese flag.
