Nanjing Road is Shanghai's most famous commercial street, stretching 5.5 kilometers from the Bund westward to Jing'an Temple. The eastern pedestrian section buzzes with neon lights, flagship stores, and over a million daily visitors, making it one of the busiest shopping streets on Earth.

History

Originally named Park Lane by the British in 1845, Nanjing Road became China's first modern shopping street. By the 1930s it was known as "the Great Horse Road" and rivaled London's Oxford Street in commercial prestige.
