Longhua Temple and Pagoda

Overview

Longhua Temple is Shanghai's oldest and largest temple complex, believed to have been founded in 242 AD by Sun Quan of the Eastern Wu Kingdom. Its seven-story pagoda, visible from afar, is the city's only surviving ancient pagoda.

• Longhua Pagoda: A 40-meter, seven-story octagonal brick-and-wood pagoda originally built in 977 AD.
• Bell Ringing Ceremony: Every New Year's Eve, 108 bell strikes ring out to symbolize the removal of 108 worldly worries.

History

Legend attributes the original temple to the 3rd century, though the current structures largely date to Song Dynasty restorations in the 10th century. The pagoda has survived fires, wars, and the Cultural Revolution.
