The Ruins of St. Paul's is Macau's most iconic landmark — the towering granite façade and grand stairway of the 17th-century Church of Mater Dei, which burned down in 1835. Part of the UNESCO-listed Historic Centre of Macau, the ruins stand as a powerful symbol of the city's Portuguese colonial and Jesuit heritage.
The original church was built between 1602 and 1640 by Japanese Christian exiles and Chinese craftsmen under Jesuit supervision, making it Asia's largest Catholic church at the time. After fires destroyed the complex in 1835, only the elaborate front façade survived. The ruins were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005.
