Fortaleza do Monte is a 17th-century Jesuit military fort perched on the hill directly behind the Ruins of St. Paul's. Its star-shaped ramparts and historic cannons offer panoramic views over central Macau, and the Macau Museum occupies its interior.
Built by Jesuits between 1617 and 1626, the fort famously repelled a Dutch invasion in 1622 when a cannonball struck an enemy gunpowder store. It served as the governor's residence until 1749 and later housed a weather observatory before being converted into a public park.
