The Mandarin's House is the former residence of the influential Chinese literary figure Zheng Guanying (1842–1922), author of the reformist classic "Words of Warning in Times of Prosperity." The sprawling compound blends Chinese and Western architectural styles across more than 60 rooms.
Built around 1869, the compound was the Zheng family's residence for several generations. By the late 20th century it had deteriorated into a multi-family tenement. A decade-long government restoration beginning in 2001 carefully preserved original materials and won a UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Award in 2011.
