Guia Fortress sits atop Macau's highest natural point (91 m), crowned by the oldest lighthouse on the Chinese coast and a small chapel with original 17th-century frescoes blending Western and Chinese artistic styles. It is part of the UNESCO-listed Historic Centre.
The fortress was constructed in 1638 by Augustinian nuns as a retreat before being fortified for military use. It served as Macau's typhoon warning station for over a century. The chapel frescoes — a unique Sino-Portuguese artistic fusion — are considered Macau's most significant mural paintings.
